History

It is thought that Alford Manor was built by John Hopkins in circa 1611 although its early years history is hazy.  It is believed that the property may have been sold to Sir Robert Christopher around 1638.  Sir Robert Christopher went on to fight on the Royalist side in the Civil War and was awarded in knighthood in 1660 as a reward for his loyalty from Charles II.

Lucy Christopher inherited the manor following the death of Sir Robert, she wnet on to marry John Manners, the Duke of Rutland.

Following the end of the occupation by the Christopher line, the house was rented by a number of tenants, the most notable of which was John Higgins in approximately 1820.  John Higgins was a good friend of Charles Darwins father, Robert.

The property was eventually purchased by Dorothy Higgins, a descendent of John Higgins.  Dorothy gifted the property to Alford Town Council in 1967, following which the Alford Civic Trust was established to manage it.
