History
The Menzies clan are believed to have been well established in Perthshire by the twelth century, and are known to have had at least two other homes prior to the construction of Castle Menzies. Construction of the castle began after a fire at Comrie Castle left the area, where Menzies Castle stands today, available for building. Construction began in 1488 under the orders of Sir Robert Menzies and was to be called the Place of Weem. Unfortunatley this building was short lived as it was burtn to the ground in 1502 by the owner of the nearby Garth Castle. It was sometime after this date (the specific date is not known) that construction of the castle in the form it stands today was begun.
The castle has had a rocky life and was originally constructed as both a family home and to provide protection of many enemies. By 1577 the clan had decided that the threat of its enemies had greatly reduced and they made alterations to make the castle more comfortable. Unfortunately this meant that the castle was not as well protected as it could have been from the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 as a result it was occupied during both rebellions, including acting as a resting place for Bonnie Prince Charlie on his way to Culloden.
Following the arrival of more peacable times, two new wings were added to the castle in the eightheen and nineteenth century. As is often the way, by the beginning of the twenthieth century the family was beginning to die out and the castle fell on hard times. The castle was rented out until 1957 when it was purchased by the Menzies Clan Society, whos ownership it continues to remain up to the present day.
